Shepherd Neame's 1698

Appearance

Auburn with lasting off white head

Aroma

Marzipan with hops and a faint hint of butterscotch

Taste

Chewy malt at first with butterscotch and just as think it may get to sweet the hops come in to balance with a touch of peppercorns. The finish is surprisingly dry with light toasted grain the bitter hint of pepper hops and a bit of tangy citrus.

Overall

This is beer is a really good pint well balanced and subtle.

Mont des Cats

Today's offering is a French trappings beer brewed with the help of chimay

Appearance

Cloudy orangy chestnut with large off white head

Aroma

Orange like citrus with a good helping of peppery hops.

Taste

Malt starts but is reigned in first by orange acidity and building earthy hops. The finish is long with peppery hops and earthy hops with grain likemalt and still the citrus.

Overall

I think this beer will age well, a good beer but just missing the complexity of other trappists.

Beowulf Dragon Smoke Stout

Apperance

Dark brown or black with fast disappearing light brown cream head

Aroma

Peat smoke and treacle with a touch of sultarnas

Taste

Dark roasted grain with a bitterness tempered with a touch of vinous fruits and a slight metallic taste, think stilton and a touch of lambic wet hay. The finish is sneaky the taste fade and you think no finish and then it grows with Smokey bitterness.

Overall

Think I over chilled this one, and not the weather for this beer but this is a nice stout.

Burton bridge Tickle Brain Ale

Today's very lively offering is from Burton, so I expect Apple's.

Apperance

Mid cloudy chestnut with very large cream head

Aroma

Slightly sour like a lambic wet hay with a hint of apple.

Taste

Start sour and just like that a huge hit of sweetness with raisins and sultarnas which fades and apples take over. The finish is sweet chewy malt with slight sour Apples and a nice warmth from the alcohol.

Overall

This beer is so contrasting in flavour it should not work but it does. Not an easy drinking beer but a good one.
